DEA Numbers

Nurse practitioners with a Certificate of Fitness to prescribe may now apply for DEA numbers. To request an Application for Registration, DEA Form 224 (July  1998), call the DEA in Atlanta at 1-888-219-7898 or The DEA now has forms on-line for registration of advanced practice nurses.  The application form can be found on the web at the Diversion Control Program web site: www.DEAdiversion.usdoj.gov.  At the website, select “Drug Registration,” then “Registration Applications.” Fee for a DEA number for midlevel practitioners is $210 for three years.

CFR 21, Part 1300 to End, Revised as of April 1, 2001, is the Code of Federal Regulations governing the prescription of  controlled substances. It would be a good idea to order a copy for your office  now. The cost is $20 and it can be ordered by phone or mail. Credit cards are accepted for phone orders at 202/ 512-1800. Checks are accepted for mail orders  made payable to the Superintendent of Documents and mailed to the U. S.  Government Printing Office, P. 0. Box 371954, Pittsburgh, PA 15250-7954.
