Legislative Updates

July 5, 2002

Advanced Practice Bill

The advanced practice title protection bill was signed into law by Governor Don Sundquist on May 22. The new law can be found on the Secretary of State’s Web site at www.state.tn.us/sos. Click on Publications from the Home Page, then Public and Private Acts, and select Public Chapter No. 768.

Surgical Technologist Bill

The surgical technologist licensure bill died in the House Budget Subcommittee and was never placed on notice in the Senate Government Operations Committee. It had been amended to delete the entire bill and replace it with a study committee to determine the need for the legislation. Since this is the end of a two-year session, a new bill will have to be introduced next year.

The Glucagon Bill

The Glucagon bill was signed into law on June 11, and you can read Public Chapter No. 808 at the Secretary of State’s Web site at www.state.tn.us/sos.

Controlled Substance Monitoring Act of 2002

The Controlled Substance Monitoring Act of 2002 amends TCA 53, Chapter l0. It was signed by the Governor on July 3. It is a long, detailed bill and every nurse practitioner, in particular, will want to read Public Chapter No. 840 at the Secretary of State’s Web site at www.state.tn.us/sos.

Under this law a controlled substance monitoring program will be established in Tennessee through the development of an electronic controlled substance database housed in the Department of Commerce and Insurance within the Board of Pharmacy.

For more information on the Controlled Substance Monitoring Act of 2002 and other legislation, read Government Affairs in the August issue of Tennessee Nurse.
