Carol Etherington, MSN, RN, FAAN, recently received the 2003 Florence Nightingale International Foundation’s (FNIF) International Achievement Award at the International Council of Nurses (ICN) Conference Congress in Geneva , Switzerland . Etherington was acknowledged for her international contribution in advocacy for vulnerable and victimized populations, victims of disasters, and her involvement at the national level on issues including child abuse, ethics and human rights. The cover photo of this issue of the Tennessee Nurse pictures Etherington while on a medical mission with Medicine Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders in a village in central Angola , working with children to assess levels of trauma during that country’s 27-year civil war. Etherington has worked in Tajikistan , Bosnia , Cambodia , Sierra Leone , Kosovo , Poland and Honduras during and after war or disaster.
