TN Nurse: Editorial Submission Guidelines

 Tennessee Nurse Editorial Guidelines & Policies

The Tennessee Nurse welcomes submissions by writers consistent with the mission of the magazine. The Tennessee Nurse magazine is a professional association publication circulated quarterly to a diverse audience of TNA members, nursing libraries, chief nursing officers in hospitals, state nurses association headquarters and the American Nurses Association (ANA) headquarters.  All submissions must be directed to Cheri Glass, Managing Editor, at [email protected].

Guidelines

  • Query letter: A query letter may be submitted by the writer for consideration of publication.  It should include a description of the proposed article and the writer’s credentials. A response to the query letter will be sent to the writer within eight weeks from receipt at the TNA office.

  • Cover Letter:  A completed article can be submitted for consideration without a query letter. A submission cover letter is included to identify the author and include a complete mailing address, work and home phone numbers, and any available e-mail addresses.  The cover letter should include a synopsis of the submitted work as well as a description of the writer’s credentials.

  • Title: Title of the article should be no more than 10 words and invite the reader to complete the article. It should describe the main point of the article.

  • Biographical sketch: A current biographical sketch is required for each author. Include a summary of the author’s credentials, work and educational experience, current roles and other appropriate information. Please do not submit resumes, curriculum vitae or lists of job titles.

  • References:  Any manuscript that contains statements of fact or references to any other online or paper work is required to cite all sources. Authors are asked to refer to the latest edition of The Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) for references, punctuation, quotation and documentation of sources.  Due to space limitations, Tennessee Nurse may not print the references, but they will remain on file and be available upon request. 

  • Photographs & Illustrations:  Tennessee Nurse prefers to receive both photographs and illustrations in a 5 x 7 in. format.  Glossy photos, if possible.  Due to publisher’s graphic specifications, we prefer to scan in photos and create our own digital images.  If no hardcopy version exists, we will consider accepting a digital copy, but it must be at a high resolution of 300 dpi.  Each illustration must have the following information included:  author’s name, figure number, and the “top” designated  Tennessee Nurse requires that a descriptive legend accompany all illustrations, when appropriate.  Illustrations and photos will not be returned without a self-addressed stamped envelope.  Photos of identifiable patients will not be accepted, and materials taken from other sources will only be considered if they are accompanied by written authorization by both the author and the publisher.

  • Online Submissions:  Writers are authorized to submit their work to Tennessee Nurse via e-mail as long as they adhere to all of the magazine’s guidelines, as appropriate.  All submissions must be either in a Microsoft Word file or in a simple rich text format (RTF).

  • Hardcopy Submissions:  Submissions should be submitted to 545 Mainstream Drive, Suite 405, Nashville, TN  37228-1296.  Manuscripts and all related documentation (i.e.: legends, tables, references, etc.) must adhere to APA style and be typewritten, double-spaced on standard 8-1/2 x 11 white paper with one-inch margins.  All submissions must include a digital copy of the article on a 3.5″ floppy disk in either Microsoft Word or in a simple rich text format (RTF).

Editorial Policies 

  • Editing: The Tennessee Nurse reserves the right to edit all submissions to clarify content, meet acceptable language standards, and conform to style and space requirements of the magazine.

  • Publication: Publication is based on the following criteria: editorial objectives, relevance and timeliness, accuracy, appeal/interest, readability and space availability. Generally, Tennessee Nurse does not publish articles of a technical nature that would normally be printed by a scholarly journal. Word count: 500 to 1,500 words.

    Publication and/or publication dates are not guaranteed. For manuscript return, include a self-addressed stamped envelope with correct postage along with the submission.  Tennessee Nurse is not responsible for the loss of unsolicited freelance manuscripts. 

  • Copyright policy: Consideration of submissions for publication is based on the understanding that the manuscript is not being considered by any other publication and has not been previously published in print or electronic form. The Tennessee Nurse holds First Rights for print and electronic publication on the TNA web site. After publication, full rights return to the author.

  • Payment: in copies.

  • Copies & Reprints:  TNA reserves and stocks a limited number of each issue of Tennessee Nurse.  The author is able to purchase a limited quantity of any particular issue.  Formal reprints can be purchased through our publisher.  Authors wishing to acquire additional copies of Tennessee Nurse or article reprints should contact TNA.
