Description of Practice
The School Nurse Manager is a Registered Nurse (RN) responsible for the development, management, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of school health services within a school system/district. Attention is directed toward the areas of policy, strategic planning, supervision, staffing, interdisciplinary collaboration, and quality management.
The nurse manager assumes a leadership role with responsibility for:
- Assessing the needs of a school community
- Coordinating the development and revision of health policies and procedures to meet current standards
- Developing program goals and objectives
- Coordinating and planning for nursing activities and interventions
- Participating in multi-disciplinary planning for system-wide student services
- Hiring and orienting new nursing personnel
- Supervising staff in the provision of health services
- Monitoring the outcome of nursing activities for quality assurance
- Overseeing staff development to assure competency
- Coordinating the school health services with all other components of a comprehensive school health program
Qualifications
- Active Tennessee RN license in good standing;
- Baccalaureate (BSN) or higher degree in nursing;
- Educational preparation shall include the same preparations as a school nurse with the addition of management or administration and program evaluation; and
- A minimum of three years of experience in school nursing.
Employment Requirements
- Maintain continued competence;
- Current certification as a School Nurse by a nationally recognized certification organization or certification as a School Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner by a nationally recognized certification organization;and
- Maintain national certification during employment.
