This one-day conference offered a great opportunity for face-to-face meetings with state Senators and Representatives, as well as experiencing health policy development in action. All of Tennessee’s Legislators were invited to have breakfast with attendees and stay to hear the first speaker, Dr. Peter Buerhaus, PhD, RN, FAAN.

Dr. Buerhaus brought those attending up to date on the latest research on A Nursing
Shortage Like None Before. Immediately following, current TNA legislation and other health care bills were discussed. TNA presented plenty of talking points for participants to discuss when they adjourned to the Legislative Plaza to meet with Legislators, have lunch and attend the House Health & Human Resources
Committee.

The afternoon schedule included a panel discussion by nurses who worked in the last election or served on Governor Phil Bredesen’s Transition Advisory Committees for Health and TennCare, along with a presentation by Ginna Betts,                                Dr. Peter Beurhaus recently-appointed Commissioner of
Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities
for the State of Tennessee, who discussed
Mental Health – The State of the State
.
