TN-PAC: Tennessee Nurses Political Action Committee

Overview

TN-PAC is founded on the belief that nursing receives more credit if nurses make collective contributions to a candidate of their choice.

Nurses care

It’s the reason you entered health care in the first place. So, when Tennessee politicians gather to make decisions about nursing and health care, it’s important they hear from the experts — registered nurses.  What’s the best way to get their attention? — through the  Tennessee Nurses Political Action Committee (TN-PAC).

Why is TN-PAC  important?

As a registered nurse, you want your profession to be supported, protected and improved. In the highly regulated health care arena, nurses must  rely on government support to ensure their concerns and problems are addressed. And, with so many competing voices all tugging at the ears of lawmakers, it’s imperative that RNs band together through TN-PAC to make sure their voice is heard loud and clear.

How does it  work?

Because  PACs are able to contribute larger amounts of money than individuals, legislators give these organizations more attention. While this money doesn’t buy votes (no PAC contribution is large enough to buy a politician even if he or she could be bought), it does buy access.  Contributors play an important role in the political process, and politicians recognize the ability PACs have to educate them on significant issues.

What are the benefits?

RNs  deal with issues such as workplace safety and patient care on a daily basis, and it’s clear legislation can make or break a situation. When  RNs contribute to TN-PAC, they are supporting candidates who have been endorsed by the PAC because of their stand on issues important to the profession. The support is given regardless of political affiliation, and instead focuses on  improving health care.

Who can contribute?

Nurses,  nursing students and others interested in improving access to quality,  cost-effective health care.

When selecting candidates for endorsement and/or financial support, TN-PAC  considers the following:

Candidate profile and background
Dynamics of political race
Leadership position in political party
Political potential
Leadership position in the Legislature
Committee assignments/chairmanships
Sponsorship or co-sponsorship of key bills
Voting records on issues of concern to nurses
Working relationships with nurse constituents
Lobbyist recommendations
Financial resources
Willingness to accept PAC funds
